Now, I’ve never disagreed with the popular opinion that Frodo and Sam are FRIENDSHIP GOALS – it is one of those rare occasions when I can say unreservedly that the Hype is Real – but on this latest reread of The Lord of the Rings, I’ve found myself agreeing with it more than ever. ![]() Legolas and Gimli – Merry and Pippin – Gandalf and Bilbo – Éomer and Aragorn – and of course, most iconic of all, Frodo and Sam. ![]() This means it's likely Gollum had been corrupted enough for the Elven magic to hurt him, which adds even more tragedy to his grim life.It is a fact almost undeniable, I imagine, that Tolkien had a knack for writing friendships. Elven weapons and items are effective against evil, such as Frodo's glowing Elven blade. The Ring slowly corrupted him, and he even lost some of himself to the Wraith-world, which is where Frodo goes when he becomes "invisible." Due to the corruption of Gollum's body and mind, it's likely that the purity of the Elven materials didn't react well with him.Īlthough there are exceptions on both sides, Sauron and everything associated with him is often viewed as the embodiment of evil, whereas the Elves are seen as good and pure. With over 500 years spent with the One Ring, Gollum became very unnatural, including his extended life. While this definitely explains Gollum's mental trauma and distrust of Elven items, another theory suggests why the rope appears to physically hurt his body.
